Named after the Danish Queen Charlotte Amalie, the commercial center on St. Thomas is also the major shopping district. Fabulous gift shops now occupy what once was the mysterious and famous warehouse section which extended right out to the harbor wall. From this vantage point you can see how pirate and trading ships alike slipped past Water and Hassel Islands. Hassel Island was at one time was connected to St. Thomas, prior to World War II the U.S. Navy created the channel. This spectacular view of Charlotte Amalie is best photographed in the morning hours. |
